Finding Relief from Interstitial Cystitis: Why Pelvic Floor Therapy Matters

Interstitial Cystitis: Finding relief, why pelvic floor therpay matters

September is Interstitial Cystitis Awareness Month, a time to shine light on a condition that affects millions of women but is often misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or simply overlooked. If you’ve experienced chronic bladder pain, urinary urgency and frequency, or discomfort that disrupts your daily life, you may know how frustrating it can be to search for answers.

At Taylor Physical Therapy & Wellness, we want you to know: you’re not alone and there are safe, effective options to help you feel better.

What Is Interstitial Cystitis (IC)?

Interstitial Cystitis, sometimes called Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS), is a chronic condition that causes bladder pain, urinary urgency, and frequency. Some women also experience pelvic pain, painful intimacy, and bowel dysfunction. Unlike a typical urinary tract infection, IC is not caused by bacteria and doesn’t improve with antibiotics.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and often impact quality of life, making it difficult to exercise, work, sleep, or even enjoy simple activities without constant discomfort.

The Evidence: Pelvic Floor Therapy Is First-Line Care

According to the American Urological Association’s 2022 Clinical Guidelines, the only treatment backed by Grade A evidence for IC/BPS is manual pelvic floor physical therapy – not medications, not surgery.

That means skilled, hands-on pelvic therapy is the gold standard for managing symptoms. Instead of masking pain with medication, pelvic floor therapy addresses the root cause: muscle tension, trigger points, and connective tissue restrictions that can contribute to bladder pain and urinary urgency.

At Taylor PT & Wellness, our providers use gentle, non-invasive techniques to:

  • Release tight pelvic muscles and trigger points
  • Improve bladder and bowel function
  • Reduce pain with intimacy
  • Calm the nervous system to ease urgency and frequency

A Holistic, Whole-Body Approach

We know pelvic pain and bladder symptoms don’t exist in isolation. Stress, posture, hormones, and lifestyle factors can all play a role in how your body feels. That’s why our care goes beyond the pelvic floor to include:

  • Relaxation-based manual therapy
  • Breathing and movement retraining
  • Education on self-care strategies
  • Collaboration with massage therapists, nutritionists, and other holistic providers

Our goal is not just to reduce your symptoms, but to help you feel truly supported, empowered, and in control of your healing journey.
