Keep Your V Happy This Christmas
The holidays can bring lots of excitement but also lots of pelvic floor issues for women. Learn about these common issues and how you can keep your pelvic floor healthy and happy this December🎄
Common Holiday Issues
- Constipation 💩
- Urinary frequency and urgency 💦
- Less regular physical activity 🏃🏼♀️
- Increased muscular tension from holiday stress 👀
- Altered sleep schedules and fatigue 🌙
- Vaginal dryness and irritation 🌵
What Can I Do?
Constipation: To prevent and manage holiday related constipation make sure you are doing these three things:
- Hydrate with plain water in small sips throughout the day.
- Sit on the toilet at the same time each morning (all about routine!)
- Add extra soluble fiber to your diet (such as ground flax seed) to soften and bulk up your stool consistency.
Bladder Issues: Many holiday foods and beverages can be irritating to the bladder and cause an increase in urinary urgency, frequency, and leaking.
- Common irritants include coffee, alcohol, caffeine, carbonation, and citrus.
- To minimize these side effects, sipping plain water between irritants (ex: between glasses of wine) can dilute your urine and make it less irritating.
- Balancing your day is key. If you know you have a party to attend where you may drink alcohol, skip that second cup of coffee or la croix earlier in the day.
Sleep & Exercise: Traveling, stress, and different schedules can mean less exercise and disrupted sleep (…and make us feel tired and sluggish). Try these tips:
- Move your body each day even if it’s for a few minutes! This can be a neighborhood walk before bedtime, dance party with your children/grandchildren, or an online yoga flow. Little minutes of movement add up and can help us sleep better and lower our stress levels.
- Sleep Hygiene: Try to go to bed at the same time each night (yes even if all the presents aren’t wrapped yet!). Having restorative sleep helps us to concentrate better and regulate our mood.
